Burwarton Show – THURSDAY 2 AUGUST 2012.

VOTED TOP LOCAL (ONE DAY) SHOW BY FARMERS GUARDIAN READERS.

A great day out for all the family with something for everyone.

A very successful and enjoyable AGM was held on 23 January 2012 with Richard Yates and Mike Bradbury being re-elected to serve as Chairman and Vice Chairman respectively for a further two years.  Rob McCabe was elected as Treasurer taking over the role from Ken Vine who stood down in order to concentrate on the Show Awards and advertising activities.

Richard was born in 1966, studied at Aberystwyth University where he gained a B.Sc. (Hons) in Agriculture before returning to his family farm comprising some 850 acres concentrating on dairy, beef, sheep and arable  activities.   He is married to Sally and has two daughters, Laura and Olivia.   Richard continues a long line of family involvement with the Show over a great many years and was formerly Chairman of the Livestock Committee.

Mike was born and educated in North Wales and started his career in forestry at Bramham Park Estate before studying at Newton Rigg College in Cumbria.  After gaining further experience at Bramham he moved to the Guisborough Estate in North Yorkshire and then to Pulford Forestry.  He joined Burwarton Estates in 1977 as Head forester and began his long association with the Show.   Mike is married to Jackie and has two children and three grandchildren.

Rob was born in Derbyshire, studied at Lancashire College of Agriculture and Harper Adams to gain a PgD and became a Chartered Surveyor and Fellow of the Central Association of Agricultural Valuers.  He joined Nock Deighton Agricultural LLP in 2005 and became a Partner in 2009.  Rob is married to Debbie and has two children.  He is a keen cyclist and has completed three 100 mile charity bike rides in recent years.

About the Show

The additional roadway constructed in 2011 links up the existing roads to make a circular hard trackway around the showground.  This made life much easier for both Show officials and contractors during the pre-show build up period particularly in a wet period and also for trade vehicles on Show day itself.

The additional field for parking which was shared between livestock and public/member vehicles proved invaluable last year.  The new entrance gate off this additional parking field on to the showground via the livestock area proved very popular and relieved some of the pressure on the main entrance gate at peak arrival times in the morning.

The expansion and re-organisation of the Livestock field to provide additional showing rings for the sheep and the newly introduced pig classes worked very well and help accommodate the increased number of sheep entries.  The cattle showing rings remained in the same area.   Two displays of alpacas, the popular Fleece competition marquee incorporating spinning demonstrations and other agricultural related tradestands will all add to the interest of the area.  2012 will see the introduction of a sheep shearing competition, further details of which will be posted shortly.

A further development completed in 2011 was the re-alignment of the entrance to the Ludlow car park off the B4364 which provided improved access for visitors travelling from Ludlow.

If anyone would like to join our team of stewards to help out on Show day, do please contact the Show Office.      Additional help is always required on Show day in many areas – livestock, equine, gates, parking so if you are able to assist, or know someone who would, we would like to hear from you.   A Steward’s badge allows the holder free entrance to the Show and also use of Members’ facilities throughout the day.

Please note that dogs are allowed on the showground provided they are kept on leads at all times but are NOT allowed in either the Livestock area or the Members’ enclosure (except guide dogs for the visually impaired).
